the ways of the world. Let your life be one of praise of the Word
(nam), charity (dim), ablution (isnan), service (seva}, and prayer
(simran). Nanak, I give thee My pledge. Let this be thy life's
mission.' 14
Nanak's voice rose in praise of his Maker:
There is One Cod.
He is the supreme Lruth.
He, the Creator,
Is without fear and without bate.
He, the Omnipresent,
Pervades the universe.
He is not born,
Nor does He clie to be bom again.
By His grace shalt thou worship Him.
Before time itself
There was truth.
When time began co run its course
He was the truth.
Even n<lw, He is the truth
And evermore shall tn1th prevail.
(Japji)
The Mysterious Voice spoke again:
'Nanak, he whom you bless will be blessed by Me; he co whom
you are benevolent shall receive My benevolence. I am the Great
God, the Supreme Creator. Thou art the Guru, the Supreme
Guru of God.' 15
Nanak is said to have received Lhe robe of honour from the
hands of God Himself.
He was missing for three days and nights and it was assumed
that he bad drowned. He reappeared on the fourth day. The
janamsakhi reports his dramatic return:
'People said, "Friends, he was lost in the river; from where
hath he emerged?" Nanak came home and gave awaJ' all he
bad. He had only his loin cloth left on him and kept nothing
besides. Crowds began to collen. The Khan also came and
asked, ''Nanak, whal happened to you?" Nanak remained silent.
